While you are tapping threads, you may face many problems like breakage, chipping and oversized thread etc. if in the following checklist, Fidelity tools lists the most common causes and the solutions of the tap problems, like tap breakage, thread size issues and chipping

tapping operations

tapping operations

Tap Breakage
Cause Solution
  • Too high torque
  • Tap worn out
  • Incorrect or lack of lubricant
  • Tap hitting bottom of hole
  • Tap speed too high
  • Trapped chip
  • Tap drill hole too small

  • Use the right torque settings
  • Replace new tap
  • Use appropriate lubricant
  • Increase drill depth or reduce thread depth
  • Lower cutting speed
  • Check the right drills for the hole preparation

Undersized thread
Cause Solution
  • Wrong tolerance
  • Tap worn out
  • Excessive pull off pressure
  • Tap drill hole too small

  • Choose tap with higher tolerance
  • Replace new tap
  • Adjust tapping attachment
  • Increase drill diameter

Oversized thread
Cause Solution
  • Wrong tolerance
  • Wrong tap for application
  • Incorrect axial feed
  • Tap speed too slow
  • Wrong tool holder “over feed thread”
  • Choose tap with lower tolerance
  • Refer to right application
  • Check the cutting speed and feed
  • Ensure feed rate is controlled

Chipping
Cause Solution
  • Wrong tap for the material/application
  • Incorrect or lack of lubricant
  • Tap hitting bottom of hole
  • Trapped chip
  • Surface hardening in drilled hole
  • Check tool selection
  • Use appropriate emulsion or oil
  • Increase drill depth or reduce thread depth
  • Check tool selection
  • Check drilling recommendations
